What does Kodi IPTV mean?
Kodi is an open-source media center. It does not include a channel package. “Kodi IPTV” or “Kodi IP TV” usually refers to connecting Kodi's Live TV interface to an IPTV source through a PVR client. Use only broadcasts, personal streams or provider accounts you are authorized to access.
What you need
- A current Kodi installation from the official project.
- The official PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on.
- A lawful local M3U file or remote M3U URL.
- An optional XMLTV URL or file for program guide data.
- A stable network connection and enough device storage.
Step 1: install PVR IPTV Simple Client
- Open Settings from the Kodi home screen.
- Select Add-ons, then Install from repository.
- Open PVR clients.
- Select PVR IPTV Simple Client.
- Choose Install and wait for confirmation.
Use the add-on in Kodi's official repository. Avoid unofficial builds that bundle unknown playlists or promise paid content for free.
Step 2: configure the M3U playlist
- Go to Settings → Add-ons → My add-ons → PVR clients.
- Open PVR IPTV Simple Client and choose Configure.
- Find the playlist or M3U section.
- Select a remote URL for a web-hosted playlist or a local path for a file stored on your device.
- Enter the complete authorized location and save.
A remote list can reflect provider updates without replacing a local file. A local file offers more control and privacy but must be replaced manually when its contents change.
Step 3: add an XMLTV program guide
If your provider supplies an XMLTV source, open the EPG settings in the same add-on and enter its local or remote location. Guide matching typically depends on M3U tvg-id values corresponding to channel IDs in XMLTV. If names load but schedules do not, check those identifiers and the device time zone.
Step 4: enable and restart
Confirm the client is enabled, save the settings and restart Kodi. Kodi should import channels into the TV or Live TV section. Large playlists and guide files may need time to process on lower-powered devices.

The TV section is empty
Verify that the PVR client is installed and enabled, the M3U location is complete, and the source is reachable from the Kodi device. Restart Kodi after saving. If necessary, clear PVR data from Kodi settings and let it import again.
Channels appear but do not play
Test more than one authorized entry. Confirm account status, network access and supported stream formats. An available channel name does not guarantee that its source is currently online.
The guide is blank or offset
Check the XMLTV URL, tvg-id matching, Kodi device clock and time zone. Do not apply a global time shift until you know which layer is incorrect.
Kodi takes too long to start
A very large playlist or XMLTV file can slow imports. Ask the provider for a smaller regional list or use an IPTV playlist editor to remove authorized entries you do not need.
Privacy and maintenance
M3U and XMLTV URLs can contain private tokens. Do not include them in Kodi log files shared publicly without redaction. Update Kodi and official add-ons regularly, keep a backup of your configuration, and remove credentials before selling or resetting a device.
Frequently asked questions
Does Kodi include IPTV channels?
No. Kodi is software and requires a lawful source or compatible PVR backend.
Can Kodi read M3U8?
Support depends on the Kodi version and playback context. The official documentation lists M3U for IPTV Simple Client and newer Kodi versions also recognize M3U8 in basic playlist contexts.
Can I add multiple playlists?
IPTV Simple Client configuration and capabilities can vary by version. For complex multi-source setups, consider a compatible PVR backend or separate managed configuration rather than merging private lists on an unknown website.
